William Pudney born 1826 – my 3x great grandfather

Having decided to try to complete the details of my 16 ggg grandfathers I followed up William PUDNEY who was born around 1826 in Maldon in Essex according to the 1881 census.    I found a marriage listed on Free BMD and sent for the certificate which shows that William, a shoemaker,  married Emma BICKMORE in  November 1851 in the Register Office in Maldon.  His father is listed as James PUDNEY, a mariner.

William and Emma moved to London (West Ham / Plaistow / Canning Town) by 1861, when they were recorded in the census living at 3 Broadway, Plaistow.  Perhaps they felt that there would be more opportunities in East London  for them and their growing family.  The railway had arrived in the area and it would have been  easier to get from Maldon to London.  Plaistow  hadn’t yet been completely  swallowed up by the expansion of London.

In 1871 the family is recorded at 75 Scott Street, Plaistow and by 1881 they had moved again, to 34 Roscoe Street, West Ham.  It’s their presence there that suggests that I have the right family as in the same property are Francis Wiltshire and his wife Emma, with their daughters, Emma and Margaret.  Francis and Emma are my 2x great grandparents.

William and Emma had 8 children shown on the censuses:

  • Emma, born 1855
  • Hannah, born 1857
  • Kate, born 1859
  • Eliza, born 1861
  • Louisa, born 1864
  • William, born 1866
  • Ellen, born 1872
  • Florence, born 1877

William appears to have died by 1891 when Emma is a widow living with her 16 year old daughter, Florence.
